Every Day is a Good Day
“Every Day is a Good Day” tells the story of the long but uneventful life of Hotei. Hotei was a T’ang Dynasty zen practitioner and the ill prepared recipient of a devastating satori.
John Barleycorn
“John Barleycorn” is a traditional song which deals with the personification of the agricultural year and can also be understood as an allegory of Christ’s Passion. Its origins remain obscure and opinion is divided as to whether it is of great antiquity or of more recent times.
The Executioner’s Songs
“The Executioner’s Songs” is a trilogy of American murder ballads. It was conceived as two counterparts;
Little Sadie
“Little Sadie” in which a man kills a woman for no apparent reason.
The Long Black Veil
"The Long Black Veil” tells the story of an illicit love affair with tragic consequences and acts as a pivot between the other two songs. The original idea was to use only songs without a basis in fact or historical context but after the work was completed it was found the last in the trilogy was a famous case albeit with a different outcome.
Frankie and Albert
and “Frankie and Albert” in which a woman kills her lover for a very obvious reason.
